Havener Fanfare was commissioned by Don Miller and the University of Missouri-Rolla Band for the dedication ceremonies of the Havener Center on their campus. The piece was premiered by that ensemble on October 6, 2004. Since the premiere was to be given in a three-story atrium that features a 500 square foot floor space, Don Miller suggested to me that I consider taking advantage of that space by using something like the antiphonal approach of Gabrieli. This led to the concept of having performers on either side of the atrium with the band on the floor in the middle. For concert performance, the trumpet and percussion players should be on opposite sides of the hall, preferably out in the hall itself or in balconies, not in the backstage areas.
